A 10 days cycling tour to the most beautiful parts of south-eastern Transylvanian corner. Cycling, we discover the beautiful architecture of the Saxon villages et their most impressive fortified churches. Beside the culture we pass picturesque panoramas over the mountains et flowery meadows and hills.
DAY 1: Transfer from the airport to the mountains. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a guesthouse at the foothills of Romanian Carpathians. Spectacular views.
DAY 2: We start our cycling tour by going to next village to visit Bran castle, built in 1377. Since 1920 the castle has become the summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania, the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of England. The castle is strangely linked to the Count Dracula, even if it is doubtful that Vlad the Impaler ever spent the night here.For lunch we cycle over the hills to arrive in the beautiful villages of Magura and Pestera, with stunning views over he mountains. Dinner and same overnight accommodation as the night before.
DAY 3: From Zarnesti we cycle through the picturesque villages of Sinca, Recea, Lisa. On your left side along the route you have splendid views of the Fagaras Mountains, the highest mountains in Romania, also called the Transylvanian Alps.In the end of our day we pass Saxon villages. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a Saxon village, with village families.
DAY 4: We make a circuit today and we will take a rough country road to Viscri, a remote village with a beautiful 12th fortified church built by Szekelys and taken over by Saxon colonists in 1185. Beside the one-room church and the traditional house architecture, we can still find treasures of many Saxon civilization families: old furniture, traditional Saxon costume, domestic objects, etc. Viscri is under Mihai Eminescu Trust protection (founded with the help of Prince Charles), a project which wants to ensure the survival of the unique architecture and treasures of the fascinating Saxon “lost world”.Lunch in the village. Dinner and accommodation same as previous night.
DAY5: We continue today passing the Saxon settlements of 12th century, when they were invited to Transylvania to guard the mountain passes. They built their Roman and early Gothic churches, which were initially strengthened to provide refuge against the Tartars and then surrounded by high walls and towers to resist the militarily more sophisticated Turks. It will be a nice experience through the villages, looking for the key holder of the church and climbing the narrow steps of the towers to have a stunning view of the area. See the villages of Cincu, Merghindeal, Dealu Frumos, Agnita.We arrive in Sighisoara, considered to be the most beautiful and complete medieval architectural assemble of Romania and the most beautiful inhabited citadel throughout Europe. Sighisoara is also the birth place of Vlad the Impaler, connected according Bram Stoker’s novel with Count Dracula. The medieval citadel is perched on a hillock and is fortified with a 14th century wall. Overnight accommodation, right in the center of the fortress. Dinner independently.
DAY6: On cycle north of Sighisoara, to pass villages where Saxons, Romanians, Hungarians and Gypsies happily live.Dinner and accommodation with village families, in an old Saxon village.
DAY 7: During our tour today, we will have a brief stop in Medias, one of the Saxon “Siebenburgen” (seven towns) to feel the atmosphere, to visit the Evangelic church and to climb to the top of “Trumpets Tower”, the younger "sister" of the Tower of Pisa (being also inclined). We continue to Sibiu, passing more old villages with beautiful architecture. Accommodation in Sibiu, the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2007.
DAY 8: Sibiu – Hermannstadt is the first town in Romania, which has been nominated to bear the title of European Capital of Culture in 2007, together with its twinned town from Western Europe, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Sibiu gather together nearly 80 hectares of old architecture, one of the best preserved medieval towns in south-eastern Europe.After visiting the city, we make a bicycle circuit in the villages around, traditionally shepherds village. Lunch and folk entertainment in a roumanian traditional village. Accommodation in Sibiu, as the night before.
DAY 9: Transfer by bus to Bucharest to spent our last evening in Romania. City tour to see the Arch of Triumph and Ceausescu big project: The People’s Palace. Accommodation in a hotel, lunch and dinner independent.
DAY 10:
Transfer to the airport.
